Genre research

When starting my genre research, I decided to firstly analyse a well-known film trailer for the film 'Charlie St Cloud'. I use iMovie to comment on the use of shots and what the effect of this shot meant for the audience. Yet again it showed me what is typical for my genre and how it is most effectively presented.

After analyzing the film trailer on iMovie, I continued to look more thoroughly into making a romantic film trailer. I have presented my findings in a PowerPoint, I also looked at film trailers as a whole so that I could distinguish the main different between different genres. The purpose of this is so that when I produce my trailer it can clearly be recognized by my audience as a romantic film trailer.
Analysis of 'Dear John' poster. Analysis includes the use of images, typography , colour, layout, language and conventions. I have attached all the trailer that I have analysed below. These include 'Dear John', 'Love Happens' and 'P.s I love you'.  .

Below is a short animatic of 'Dear John', it highlight significant aspects of the poster such as the font and use of image. It allowed me to understand the most recognizable and considered aspects of a film poster.

trailer.

This is an analysis of the film poster for 'Love Happens'. It shows a break down of different aspects of the poster and comments on the effect of them.
Below I have continued to analyse two magazine covers and a poster. All focusing on the use of typography, image, colour, layout, language and conventions of form and genre. It has taught me the importance of making my own promotional package recognizable to my target audience. I need my audience to recognize a clear use of fonts and colours in association to my film trailer. I also need to make sure my ancillary products are effectively constructed in terms of layout and do not appear cluttered or unorganized.

This is an analysis of a promotional package. Including a poster, a website and shot types from within the trailer of 'The Notebook'. Analyzing a promotional package enabled me to understand the key similarities between the products. Therefore my own film poster, magazine cover and trailer should be easily compared to each other through its use of font and colours mainly.

After looking at individual trailers, posters and magazine covers I decided to make a short summary presentation on the key aspects of a romantic film trailer so that I could look back on it after creating my first draft. It will enable me to consider whether I have effectively used conventions of genre.

Furthermore to my genre research, I summarized all my findings visually using 'Popplet'. It also meant that I could brainstorm any ideas further in terms of the plot of my trailer.

This is the breakdown of every shot within 'The Notebook' trailer. I learnt from this the variety of shot types used within a trailer and concluded that mainly two-shots and close-ups demonstrated the relationship between my characters. It also gave me an idea of the length of shots I would take. I realized I would need a greater variety of locations than I first thought to keep the trailer exciting and fast paced for the audience. These types of shots were used in order to contrast characters, for example on their social class by the use of clothing, general appearance etc. Close-up gives the audience the ability to analyse the emotions of the characters and therefore understand how they are feeling and why they are feeling that way. Wide-shots can be used in the same way that an establishing shot is used in terms of showing the audience the location and the surrounding characters within the shot. The shot generally are a few seconds in length and a large amount of shots types are used within the trailer transitioning between around 11 scenes.

Furthermore I have summarized my findings from my content analysis.

  .

In order to shape my trailer to appropriate audiences I began institution research. I spent time reflecting on what institution I would want to distribute my film trailer and concluded that it was 'New Line Cinema'. Below I have demonstrated research into my chosen institution and looked into the films it has previously distributed. This enabled me to compare the films and look for similarities between them and my own.

Below are another two analysis's of two film trailers, focusing on the use of camerawork and mise-en-scene. From these I learnt the importance of costume when presenting a character to the audience. For example I realized in order to show the educated and hardworking persona of my female character I would need to dress them appropriately in formal clothing and associate them with certain locations. I also found that eyeline matches and point of view shots gave a sense of perspective which will be important when my characters are engaged in conflict.
